How to Flip an Image Layer in Photoshop

There are a number of ways you can do this, and all of them depend on how far you want to go. If you want to flip the entire image without making any changes, you can do so in a few short clicks. However, if you want to flip an individual layer, this will take a few extra steps.

How to Flip the Entire Canvas in Photoshop

There are only a few short steps to this one:

  1. Go to the top of the screen and click Image
  2. Choose Image Rotation, then Flip Canvas
  3. Decide whether you want to flip your canvas horizontally or vertically

This will flip everything. If your image has individual layers, it won’t make a distinction; it flips them all. This is a great fix for the backward text in your t-shirt. However, if you want to flip an image layer in Photoshop, the process works a bit differently.

If you need to flip an individual layer, you’ll need to unlock that layer first. Otherwise, Photoshop won’t allow you to make any changes to it. You can do this by either clicking the padlock or double-clicking to create a New Layer.

From the dropdown menu, choose Edit. Then find the Transform option. Under this category, you should see several options, but you’ll want to go to the bottommost ones that say flip horizontally or vertically.

Note, this can flip any type of layer. No extra steps are necessary for, say, a raster layer. If you want to isolate a foreground element in order to flip it, you can use the photo background remover.

Freeform Transform Tool for Extra Control

Perhaps you need finer control for flipping an image layer in Photoshop. In this case, use the Freefrom transform tool. From the dropdown menu, you’ll want to select Edit and then Free Transform. Now all you have to do is drag one of the boxes until you have flipped the image the other way.
