Mechanical scanning was a method of displaying an image or series of images on a TV screen by moving the device across and down, which is where we got the term “scanning” from. TV’s often used to be nicknamed ‘the tube’ because the screens were actually glass tubes.
The first TVs could receive only one channel and had a very low resolution, meaning it couldn’t display many details. They used to be measured in lines of resolution instead of pixels because the technology back then didn’t allow for them to use square pixels like they do today.
Televisions today couldn’t be any more different and would be unrecognisable John Baird. Today televisions are ‘smart TVs’ and are internet-connected devices. This means that they can access a wide range of online content, services and apps that wouldn’t have been possible in the past. Modern TVs are able to display much more detail than their predecessors because they have higher resolutions, which means that they can show images with more dots or pixels per inch on the screen.
